Flash

Dead technology?

It's not particularly accessible, or usable sometimes, it's not great for search engine optimisation, it requires the installation of proprietary software, plus the user needs to have the right version...

But I think Flash still has a place. A small place maybe, but a place nonetheless...

I would never do a full, Flash-only website - I don't really see the point. You'll probably end up with lots of fancy, swooshy transitions and animations which all look very nice but it won't take long before a user tires of having to wait for each animation to complete every time they click a link. Then just as your users are getting fed up, you'll be wondering why you are no longer on page 1 of Google.

Don't do it to yourself or your customers!

Flash is fine in moderation.

In the last couple of years the only use I've had for Flash has been photo slideshows, animated news tickers and interactive maps. All of which are achievable with Javascript but I prefer to use Flash as I find the transitions are smoother and I like being able to preload content from XML. I do also quite enjoy creating stuff in Flash and feel quite familiar with Actionscript as its very similar to Javascript. In fact I was much more into Flash before I discovered jQuery.

The photo slideshow on the Mallory Court Hotel website was written entirely in Actionscript 3.

So no, not dead.
